Predictable patterns of unsustainable intensification

To increase understanding of agricultural intensification processes over time and their sustainability, we studied dimensions sustainability in the context ongoing expansion intensive, commercial mono-cropping banana Southwestern Uganda. In our approach considered five sustainability: economic, productivity, environment, social human. We compared farming systems 1998 2018 integrated a gender lens. A total four focus group discussions, two interviews fifteen individual (8m / 7f) were conducted, complemented with discourse analysis newspaper articles. Results show that although production increased average income level indicating improvement economic dimension, it did not yield sustainable outcomes other dimensions. The illuminated aspects often neglected assessment studies or policy-making around intensification, particular socio-economic dynamics. further recognized observed local trends are part set patterns take place throughout world. conclude to advance development, stakeholders should move away from current over-emphasis on values prioritizing individual, avoiding unsustainable development requires broadening environmental community values.
